The gallery developed for Turner Prize 2013 was originally a set of two adjoining dormitories (Buildings 80 and 81) that were part of the former Ebrington military barracks. The larger site, originally known as "Stronge's Orchard", was first used for military activity during the siege of Derry in 1689 when the army of King James II bombarded the walled city.  The founding stone of the army base as laid by Viscount Ebrington in 1839 and the base was subsequently opened in 1841 as a Star Fort.
